Maurice Sendak: 'I refuse to lie to children'

“I refuse to lie to children,” says Sendak. “I refuse to cater to the bullshit of innocence.”

Whatever you think of it, it’s a provocative sentiment. It makes you wonder how and when people should (and/or do) learn the truth of things, and what art has to do with the process.

Also of interest: Sendak’s calling Salman Rushdie (who I don’t mind, personally) a “flaccid fuckhead.” I think I’m pretty good at vulgar insults, but I have to concede there.
